Living in a small university town all the drunk Saturday nights start to blend together, so we decided we needed to spice it up. Naturally, my roommates and I couldn’t do anything normal. We had to do a full-on transformation that included a trip to Party City in Moncton, Michael’s and 2-hour paint project. The one rule of the night was the hat must stay on at all costs and a crazy outfit is required. Let me take you through the series of events.

  1. The Process of Decorating

After scrolling through Tik Tok and Pinterest we all had visions for our hats. To get all the materials we had to drive to Moncton 30 minutes away to find hats at Party City. We unfortunately could not get our hands on white hats, so we had to settle for purple and blue. We also got spray paint, fluffy boa’s, glitter and extra acrylic paint at Michael’s. When we got home, we headed outside and spent 30 minutes spray painting. That didn’t work too well so luckily, we had an extra bucket of white wood paint from a previous DIY project laying around. Definitely recommend using super intense thick paint for a base coat, it goes much faster. It took us probably four hours to finish decorating the hats. However, the process was worth it. We spent the time gossiping, listening to music, and planning our night.

2. The Outfits

When you wear an obnoxious cowboy hat you kind of need an equally obnoxious outfit to go with it. Luckily, I recently got a Shein order in that had a pair of zebra print pants and Laura got a pair of sparkly purple paints at H&M. Madeleine slacked a bit and wore a plain pair of cargo pants with a shirt that matched the hat. The amount of serotonin the funky pants paired with the cowboy hats gave me is unmatched.

3. The Bar Crawl

Since COVID there haven’t been parties on the weekends, so we got creative. The night before during the decorating process we decided the best way to showcase our hats was by doing a bar crawl. In Sackville there are literally 3 bars, so it wasn’t very elaborate, but we gave each other tasks to do at each bar. For example, one of the tasks was to use the slot machines at Uncle Larry’s (which didn’t end up happening). The planned schedule was: Joey’s, Uncle Larry’s and then finish off with Ducky’s. All locations were hit, but not all members made it

4. The Actual Night

The key to every good night is a good pre. The goal of our pre was to get as drunk as we could so we could save spending money at the bar. Laura and I were okay, Madeleine not so much. Things were going good at Joey’s. We ordered a round of shots and a plate of fries and we could tell that Madeleine was beginning to get there, but she was somewhat okay. I can safely say we were all acting a little too friendly with the bartender at Joey’s. After a few shots he started to look pretty cute. Madeleine tried to flirt so we had to leave. It’s hard to flirt when you are eating fries.

When we staggered into Larry’s that’s when Madeleine’s night took a turn. The three of us spent a good 40 minutes in the bathroom. Madeleine was releasing her toxins while Laura and I were straight vibing. Once madeleine felt better, we took her home, tucked her into bed with some rice cakes with peanut butter, and continued on with the bar crawl. When we got to Ducky’s we met up with our other friends who proceeded to buy drinks. At this point, Laura and I were pretty drunk but still vibing. Our iconic friend Marcus was also sporting a cowboy hat, which made everything better. After about an hour at Ducky’s things are pretty fuzzy. All I know is that I woke up wearing zebra pants.

Overall, I cannot recommend enough having a DIY night with your friends/roommates. We now have our creations hanging proudly in our living room and every time I look at them it is a happy reminder of one of the most memorable nights we’ve had in Sackville. Even though everyone thought we looked insane, I can safely say I felt confident and hot. Madeleine did too until her night took a turn for the worst. Maybe this semester we will find another way to pop off DIY style.
